Neue Zürcher Zeitung article on ESI: "A portal to Balkan diversity and vibrant centre of excellence"

Martin Woker, editor with the Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote on ESI's work on the Balkans. His article was published on 15 January 2008 under the title "A portal to Balkan diversity" ("Ein Portal zur Vielfalt des Balkans").

The Balkans are better than their reputation. In its eight years of operation the independent expert organization European Stability Initiative has evolved into a vibrant centre of excellence and has suc-cessfully rebutted some of the most persistent clichés.

"In its eight years of operation, ESI has had a substantial impact on international policy to-wards South Eastern Europe", ESI writes about itself. True, says an insider who strongly praises the partly-deliberately provocative approach of ESI's work; It was high time the assessment of the situation should not be left to those diplomats who experience their duty tours in the Balkans as a 'disciplinary transfer'.

Alan Grant is an Irish photographer who travelled extensively in the Balkans and other countries and regions of the world. Thanks to him, ESI is able to show fascinating pictures of the Balkans: the facades of Tirana, the painted mosques of Travnik, the fabulous old houses of Plovdiv and the spectacular blue of water - dark in the Bay of Kotor, emerald in the river valleys of Bosnia, deep blue in Ohrid, twinkling in the Aegean Sea and on the Bosporus.
