Munich – ESI at a debate on the Balkans and the EU

Adnan Ćerimagić, ESI senior analyst, took part in the panel discussion “The Balkans and the EU – New Hope, Old Obstacles”, held during the opening of Balkantage 2026 on 21 May 2026 in Munich. The event was organised by the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft as part of the annual “Balkans days” programme.

The discussion focused on renewed momentum in EU enlargement policy and the persistent political and institutional challenges facing the Western Balkans. Participants reflected on the reasons for the long stagnation of the accession process, lessons from previous enlargements, and the geopolitical and security considerations driving renewed interest in enlargement within the European Union.

Adnan spoke alongside experts and journalists specialising in Southeast Europe. The panel was moderated by Viktoria Voglsinger-Palm, deputy managing director of the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft.

In his remarks, Adnan presented ESI’s analysis of the changing political environment around enlargement, highlighting both the opportunities created by renewed geopolitical urgency and the risks of continued reform fatigue and public disappointment in the region. He also addressed the importance of maintaining a credible, merit-based accession process while improving communication with European publics about the strategic importance of enlargement.
