Florence – ESI on illiberal challenges at the State of the Union Conference

ESI's Gerald Knaus participated in the State of the Union Conference 2019 organised by the European University Institute, which took place from the 2 to 4 May 2019.
At a panel titled "Illiberal challenges to the future of the political union", Gerald presented ESI's research on challenges to Europe and in particular how Viktor Orban and Matteo Salvini have turned migration into a weapon against European centrist parties.
The event was hosted by the Institute of Human Sciences Vienna and Erste Stiftung. The other panellists were Piotr Buras from the European Council on Foreign Relations, Gabor Halmai from the European University Institute and Rosa Balfour, German Marshall Fund.
