Sarajevo – ESI joins consultation on Bosnia’s security and European future

Adnan Ćerimagić, ESI senior analyst, participated in the consultation “Bosnia and Herzegovina and Security in the Balkans and Europe”, held in Sarajevo on 22 June 2026. Organised by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue under the Chatham House Rule, the meeting brought together experts from across Bosnia and Herzegovina to discuss the country’s security challenges and its path towards Euro-Atlantic integration.
The consultation focused on three issues that are expected to shape Bosnia and Herzegovina’s future in the run-up to the October 2026 elections: the country’s prospects for accession to the European Union and NATO, the long-standing dispute over state property, and constitutional reform aimed at improving governance while safeguarding both individual rights and the rights of the constituent peoples.
Drawing on ESI’s research, Adnan discussed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s EU accession process and the importance of restoring credibility to enlargement through a transparent and merit-based approach. He argued that meaningful progress towards European integration depends on reforms that strengthen democratic institutions, improve governance, and create incentives for political compromise.
The consultation also explored practical options for dialogue after the 2026 elections, identifying possible areas for compromise on institutional reforms and ways to support a more sustainable European trajectory for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
ESI continues to contribute to discussions on democracy, the rule of law, and EU enlargement in the Western Balkans, engaging with policymakers and experts across the region.
