Vienna – ESI at Re:think Alliances
ESI's Gerald Knaus participated in a conference organised by the European Forum Alpbach, which took place from 9-11 May 2019 in Vienna and was titled "Re:think Alliances – Forging unlikely connections for a democratic Europe". As part of this conference, Gerald met with Austria's federal president Alexander van der Bellen to discuss some of the biggest challenges to the EU in the coming months and to share ESI's analysis on these issues. A particular focus was on the developments in Poland and Hungary. The meeting also allowed comparing thoughts on challenges to the rule of law in the EU and Israel with Talia Sasson, the former New Israel Fund president.
Afterwards, Gerald had a meeting at the foreign ministry to discuss the Western Balkans and EU enlargement and met with SPÖ MPs of the Committee of Home Affairs to discuss migration policy.
