ESI’s Gerald Knaus was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion on “Saving Lives. The Migrant Rescuers’ Perspective”, organised by Hypotheses 2021 Symposium.

The other panellists were Michael Buschheuer, founder of the German sea rescue organization “Sea-Eye“ and Cristina Santoyo and Fabienne Cabaret from the Mexican NGO “Fundación Justicia“.

All panellists presented their experiences to navigate humanitarian action in a political and legal landscape, in which the help for migrants is often framed as “trafficking” and criminalized. The question discussed was how to transform such narratives and reclaim the rescue of migrants as what it is, a basic act of human solidarity.
