Change and Conservatism in Central Anatolia

The Central Anatolian province of Kayseri is in the middle of Anatolia, with a population of one million. Its rapid growth of population and its fast industrialisation mirror Turkey's recent transformation. Kayseri's per capita income is close to the Turkish average. Located 330 km from Ankara and 80km from Cappadocia, it is also the political heartland of Turkey's governing AK Party, and the home and political base of former Turkish Foreign Minister and currently President Abdullah Gul.
