In June 2004, ESI held its regular members' meeting at the Swedish Consulate in Istanbul. It also launched its most ambitious project to date: ESI Turkey.
From a small office overlooking the Bosphorus, a new team began to analyse developments in the largest, most complex and most controversial EU candidate. ESI focused on three issues: social and economic developments in different regions of the country; reform of the Turkish state in the context of EU accession; and the enlargement debate both in Turkey and in EU member states.
