ESI's Gerald Knaus participated in an ECFR brainstorming on future EU policy towards the Western Balkans in light of the new dynamics in Brussels, as well as possible lessons for enlargement policy from the Visa liberalisation effort.

Participants included Carl Bildt (Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sweden), Miroslav Lajcak (Minister for Foreign Affairs, Slovakia), Vesna Pusic (MP, Croatia), Ivan Krastev (Chair of Board, Centre for Liberal Strategies, Bulgaria), Heather Grabbe (Executive Director, Open Society Institute, United Kingdom), Mark Leonard (Executive Director, European Council on Foreign Relations, United Kingdom), Albert Rohan (Former Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Austria), Pieter Feith (European Union Special Representative in Kosovo), Valentin Inzko (High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina).
