ESI’s Gerald Knaus was invited to give the keynote speech for the Intercultural Week 2021 in Meißen.

Gerald explained the historical importance of the Geneva Refugee Convention and emphasised its relevance for the present: people are currently freezing to death at the Polish-Belarusian border because they are denied entry. The European Union has a duty here – it must succeed in winning majority support for a policy based on values and human dignity.

The subsequent discussion with Joachim Klose (Konrad Adenauer Foundation) and Stephan Bickhardt (Director of the Protestant Academy of Saxony), and the audience, focused on resettlement policy, civil society engagement and sponsorship programmes.
