Twilight of Heroes – Croatia, Europe and the International Tribunal

14th November, 2012, 18:00-20:00

Open Society Foundation offices
7th Floor, Millbank Tower
21-24 Millbank
London SW1P 4QP

This documentary tells the riveting story of the next member state of the European Union: how Croatia, isolated in late 1999, broke out of its isolation, came to terms with its recent past, opened up to the rest of Europe and its neighbours and in the end convinced the rest of Europe that it was ready to join the EU.

All the major protagonists have been interviewed for this film – presidents, prime ministers, international prosecutors, nationalists and Europeanisers. The film is also a reminder how the European idea can be an inspiration for dramatic change.

The film was produced by Gerald Knaus and Fritz Ofner based on ESI research and is part of the Return to Europe film series www.returntoeurope.org  supported by Erste Stiftung.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion on “Why Croatia matters – a story of international justice and EU soft power”.  The panel members are Gerald Knaus, Founder at ESI (moderator), Minna Jarvenpaa, International Advocacy Director at OSF and Julian Borger, Diplomatic Editor at The Guardian.

The panel discussion will be followed by an opportunity to sample some Croatian wine and Croatian fusion-style snacks.
