Gerald Knaus was invited to a conference entitled "EU and Russia – Competition and Cooperation: Balkans vs Caucasus" organised by the Bruno Kreisky Forum and in cooperation with the Centre for Liberal Strategies. A group of experts from the EU, the Balkans, and the Caucasus debated on the new situation in the EU and in its periphery after the war in Georgia to figure out what works and what proved not to be working in both regions.

Gerald took part in a panel discussion entitled "Can the EU's Balkan Strategy serve as a model for its policy in the Caucasus?" with Alex Rondos, foreign-policy adviser and policy analyst, Stefan Lehne, Director for the Balkans and Eastern Europe in the EU Council, and Sandra Breka, Rbert Bosch Stiftung, Head of Berlin Office.
