Berlin – International responses to political imprisonment: How to address limitations of individual case work?

ESI's Gerald Knaus was invited to participate in a workshop on international responses to political imprisonment organised by the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi). The workshop brought together scholars, practitioners and policy actors to discuss how international responses to judicialized repression and political imprisonment can be improved.

Drawing on current academic knowledge and their own empirical research, GPPi's human rights team provided a brief overview of different limitations encountered in external political prisoner advocacy. Participants then shared their own experiences and discussed alternative strategies that could provide better protection for those at risk of political imprisonment and facilitate a broader improvement of the human rights situation. Experts on select perpetrator-focused initiatives also joined the workshop.

In a separate session, Gerald spoke about ESI's research on political prisoners and electoral fraud in Azerbaijan.
