Garmisch – ESI presentation on Migration and Refugees in Europe
ESI’s Gerald Knaus was invited to give a presentation on “Migration and Refugees in Europe” for the Applied Security Studies course at the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC).
In his presentation, Gerald explained the concepts of refugee, migrant and internally displaced persons, as well as the difference between irregular and regular migration. In addition, he described the current situation of refugees with a focus on the EU and debunked myths on the number of refugees used in various international reports.
Furthermore, Gerald spoke about the common practice of pushbacks and how irregular migration should be reduced without the use of inhumane policies and inhumane borders. He also explained how to establish a humane approach and control of irregular migration.
