Communicating Europe conferences

February 2008

As part of a new project "Communicating Europe" - ESI has been taking a group of leading Western Balkan officials working on European integration issues to Vienna, Berlin, Rome, and Paris to meet politicians, analysts and media representatives to better understand the wider debates in these countries concerning Europe and the future of enlargement. In a second step, four more seminars were to be held in Prague, Warsaw, Stockholm, and The Hague.

The conferences brought together senior policy-makers, MPs and media editors from each of the states of the Western Balkans for a day and half of off-the-record discussions on the state of debate on future enlargement in the EU Member states. ESI prepared the seminars and also compiled a detailed manual focusing on the key "connectors" in each EU Member State; the people in Government, Parliament, media, think-tanks, academia, business and interest groups who shape the debate on EU enlargement.

The series was funded by the Reuniting Europe strand of the Strategic Programme Fund of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The events were invitation-only nominations were made by British Embassies in Southeastern Europe. ESI was responsible for the agenda and the entire project management.
