On 31 October and 1 November ESI's deputy chairman Kristof Bender attended a research workshop on "EU Enlargement Strategy in the Western Balkans: Effects on the Rule of Law" hosted by Frank Schimmelfennig, Professor of European Politics and member of the Center for Comparative and International Studies at the ETH Zurich. The workshop brought together academics with think tankers and former policy makers (like Piere Mirel, former Director at DG Enlargement, and Erwan Fouéré, former EU Special Representative and EU Delegation Head in Macedonia).

Kristof gave a presentation on "Is enlargement over? The erosion of trust and what can be done about it." For a list with all presentations have a look at the workshop programme.

Alan Grant is an Irish photographer who travelled extensively in the Balkans and other countries and regions of the world. Thanks to him, ESI is able to show fascinating pictures of the Balkans: the facades of Tirana, the painted mosques of Travnik, the fabulous old houses of Plovdiv and the spectacular blue of water - dark in the Bay of Kotor, emerald in the river valleys of Bosnia, deep blue in Ohrid, twinkling in the Aegean Sea and on the Bosporus.
